In experiments to establish shoot bud culture techniques for litchi (Litchi chinensis ) cv. Seedless, the problems of microbial contamination, phenol exudation and explant browning were controlled to a great extent by using mercuric chloride or sodium hypochlorite. Culturing of shoot buds in L6 medium (MS + 0.2 mg BA + 0.5 mg GA3 + 0.1 mg IAA/litre) resulted in shoot differentiation and growth. Maximum response was obtained in May-June.
